FILM STUDIO ANNOUNCES $146 MILLION ALLEN PARK PROJECT

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
In possibly the biggest film news in Michigan to date, Unity Studios plans to turn a shuttered Visteon Corp. facility in Allen Park into the state's largest integrated entertainment production house. Credit can be given to Jimmy Lifton, a native Metro Detroiter as well as a Hollywood executive and veteran sound producer, who is responsible for spearheading this project. The Detroit News reports that,

"Officials said the project will be built in phases, the first of which is expected to open by this fall. That will bring sound stages and production facilities online, as well as a skills training center that will educate up to 1,000 students per semester.

Later phases will bring more sound stages and production facilities and eventually incorporate retail and housing components in the middle-class Downriver community of 27,500 residents, officials said."

Sweet 16: Michigan vs. Texas Tech point spread shifts/Final score prediction

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The NCAA Tournament’s Sweet Sixteen will begin on Thursday with four games.  After Thursday night, four teams will be in the Elite Eight with a chance to go to Minneapolis for the 2019 Final Four and the other four remaining teams will see their season come to an end. Here is a preview of Thursday’s games.

West Region

#4 Florida State vs. #1 Gonzaga

Florida State is looking to upset Gonzaga for the second straight season and advance to another Elite Eight. Gonzaga is looking to get a chance to get to their second Final Four in three years.  I can see this game going either way.  Both teams looked good in the first two rounds easily advancing, and both have been solid teams all season.

I give the edge to Florida State because the Seminoles play in the ACC, arguably the best conference in America, while the Bulldogs plays in the WCC who only had one other NCAA tournament team in St Mary’s.  The Seminoles are used to playing top teams, and Terance Mann along with Mfiondu Kabengele will put them over the edge in this game.  They made a deep run in the NCAA tournament last year and look like they can go even farther this season.

Prediction: Florida State-72, Gonzaga-67

#3 Texas Tech vs. #2 Michigan

In the nightcap of the West region, Michigan and Texas Tech, two of the best defensive teams in the country, will look to advance to the Elite Eight.  Both teams were in the Elite Eight last season and have again had tremendous seasons up to this point.

Both cruised to the Sweet Sixteen, and for Michigan, it got big performances by Zavier Simpson, Jordan Poole, and Charles Matthews in wins over Montana and Florida. For Texas Tech, it was able to get through Northern Kentucky and Buffalo behind the play of Jarrett Culver and Matt Mooney.

Embed from Getty Images

According to NCAA.com, both teams have top three defenses in the country with Michigan being at 2 and Texas Tech ahead at 1.  Jarrett Culver is the best player on Texas Tech, leading the team in points, assists, and rebounds, and will be a key player in this game.  Charles Matthews, one of Michigan’s best defenders, will likely be matched up with Culver and I believe that matchup very well might decide who wins this game.  Both teams struggle at times offensively, but John Beilein will have the Michigan offense prepared to face the daunting Texas Tech defense and Michigan will score just enough points to win.

Prediction: Michigan-65, Texas Tech-61

South Region

#2 Tennessee vs. #2 Purdue

Tennessee and Purdue will also face off Thursday night with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line. Tennessee was ranked in the preseason top 10 and has played like it all season.  They were even ranked number 1 in the country for some time.  Purdue lost a lot of talent from 2018 and wasn’t expected to have a great year and stumbled out of the gate going 6-5 in their first 11, but they got their act together. They only lost three games for the rest of the season and ended up winning a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Embed from Getty Images

Carsen Edwards will be the key in this game.  Edwards scored 42 against Villanova in a blowout win, but only 11 in the Boilermakers loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament.  If Tennessee can contain Edwards, I think they will have a great shot at winning.  Tennessee, led by Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield, will do enough to contain Edwards and advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2010.

Prediction: Tennessee-73, Purdue-65

#1 Virginia vs. #12 Oregon

Virginia and Oregon will face off in the late game in the South Region.  Led by Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter, and Kyle Guy, Virginia has been almost unbeatable all season only losing three games, two of those games being to Duke.  Oregon, led by Payton Pritchard, has had an up and down season.

They started ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason but fell out once freshman star Bol Bol was declared out for the season.  They looked to be out of the tournament picture after losing to UCLA but then proceeded to win eight straight including the Pac 12 tournament.

Embed from Getty Images

After getting over the hump of beating a 16 seed, Virginia dominated Oklahoma in the Round of 32.  Oregon was able to beat Wisconsin and UC Irvine pretty handily winning by 15+ in both games.  The Ducks have had a great run, but I picked Virginia to win the title for a reason, and it is finally the Cavaliers year, plus Virginia will cruise.

Prediction: Virginia-68, Oregon-50

Breaking Bread Brings Women Together For Sharing And Support

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Since 2014 Ken Snipe Enterprises, LLC (KSE) quarterly has hosted Pour Into Me: A Brunch for Multi-Generation Women. It is the brainchild of Kendra Snipe and the signature event of Snipe’s Maggie and Me cause event-planning service. Together with Snipe’s Organizational Development (OD) by Design, Maggie & Me comprise the two arms of Snipe’s purpose-driven enterprise.

Snipe formed her limited liability company through a marriage between her passion for helping others overcome adversity and her skills in organizational strategy. Maggie & Me is the community advocacy arm of her KSE brand and Organizational Development (OD) by Design is its business development and consulting arm.

After earning multiple college degrees, Snipe found herself without a career opportunity so she put her skills and training to work and formed Ken Snipe Enterprises, LLC. It began as a seed from a planned “cause event” for a close friend diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Snipe’s friend shared the diagnosis and asked for support. Snipe felt she had to do something so she made a few contacts and planned a gala that included a live band, auction items, a photo center and even a comedian. Everything was either donated or provided at a small cost. That was the birth of Maggie & Me.

“We don’t plan baby showers or weddings!” Snipe emphasizes. A ‘for cause event’ is an event planned for a cause, she explains. A need has to be addressed in conjunction with the event or Maggie & Me won’t take on the task, Snipe explained.

“For example, a family member was in need of a kidney transplant so Maggie & Me was asked to organize a concert that raised not only funds, but awareness about kidney disease in black communities. The event focused on knowing the signs (of kidney disease) and taking full advantage of resources that exist, which often can be a challenge in our community. Maggie and Me aimed to dispel myths and make folks think about how they take care of themselves and those they love. We had the Kidney Foundation come out. A 3-time kidney transplant survivor came out and shared her experience and musicians came to Wadmalaw Island from all over the Charleston area.”

After Snipe found a career opportunity, the time she could spend planning ‘cause events’ became limited. And she consults as part of OD by Design when time permits. But since she lost her mother to cancer in 2008, Snipe said, “I felt an indescribable void. I need to be around diverse women who pour into me and we can pour into each other – sharing connections, lessons and judgment-free experiences.”

So in 2014 she created Pour Into Me: A Brunch for Multi-Generation Women. “It renews me. We (women) have to keep getting to know each other in order to really maximize our collective power. True collective power comes not from walking in defense but in understanding both the intent of a woman and her limitations,” she said.

That’s what Pour Into Me: A Brunch for Multi-Generation Women has brought to countless women over the past five years. It has been described as, “a beautiful display of sisterhood! Beautifully facilitated conversation in an environment where we each felt comfortable sharing our truth” … and as “a brunch that brought together a truly diverse group of dynamic, interesting women for conversation that was both compelling and moving; ranging from the lighthearted to the profound.” Another comment was, “I can’t wait until the next brunch! The experience really impacted me and equipped me with lots of information.”

Snipe agreed with them saying, “We should invite each other to stand in that gap as often as possible. This brunch is very personal for me,” she says. Maggie & Me’s next Pour Into Me: A Brunch for Multi-Generation Women will be July 13. Snipe hopes other women will join her. Actress Celia Keenan-Bolger shares Detroit roots in Tony Award acceptance speech

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Detroit native Celia Keenan-Bolger highlighted the diversity of the city during her acceptance speech after receiving the Tony Award for best performance in a featured role in a play category on Sunday night.

“I have loved the theatre since I was 5 years old growing up in Detroit, Michigan,” Keenan-Bolger said in the speech. “I grew up in a neighborhood where my grandparents had a cross burned on their front lawn because they were being welcoming to black families who were integrating the neighborhood. They raised my mother and my siblings alongside those families, and when my mother met my father, instead of moving to the suburbs, they raised me, my brother, and my sister in that same neighborhood.”

The 41-year-old actress performed at the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and the Interlochen Center for the Arts growing up. She is a graduate of the Detroit School of Arts High School and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

She earned the award for her portrayal of Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, the staged version of Harper Lee’s acclaimed novel of the same name. To Kill a Mockingbird follows the Finch family in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930s when Scout’s father, a widowed lawyer named Atticus, defends a black man during a period of racism and discrimination.

The book is narrated retrospectively through the eyes of Scout as she looks back on one summer when she was 8 years old and recalls the events that unfolded. The book, with themes of civil rights and racial equality, has made headlines in recent years over parent complaints and the decision of a Mississippi school to pull the book from English curricula because of its “uncomfortable” language.

Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960 and won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for the novel the following year. It is loosely based on Lee’s own experiences growing up in Monroeville, Alabama.

In her speech, Keenan-Bolger thanked Lee for making “the greatest literary heroine of all time,” in addition to producer Scott Rudin, scribe Aaron Sorkin, director Bartlett Sher, employees at the theatre, and her friends and family. She said her parents read the book to her as a child.

“That I am accepting this award for playing Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird is incredibly moving to me,” Keenan-Bolger said.

To Kill a Mockingbird is currently playing at Broadway's Shubert Theatre. The show, which has enjoyed widespread success, is anticipating an extended Broadway run and upcoming national tour.

This is Keenan-Bolger’s first Tony, though she has previously earned nominations for The Glass Menagerie, Peter and the Starcatcher, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other Broadway credits include Les Misérables and The Cherry Orchard.

Additionally, Keenan-Bolger has also had TV roles, including on Law & Order, The Good Wife, and NCIS: New Orleans.

Her award was announced at Radio City Music Hall during the 73rd annual ceremony. The Tony Awards recognize excellence in live Broadway theatre and are presented by the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing.

Her brother, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, a Renaissance High School graduate and current Broadway performer, tweeted about his sister’s award.

“All I can think of is how much our mom would have lost her mind knowing that you just won your first Tony Award for playing [one of] her all time favorite strong female characters in literature,” he said. “She, much like me, is so damn proud of you.”

Michigan and national contests celebrate student inventors at The Henry Ford

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The 2019 Michigan Invention Convention is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Later in May, The Henry Ford will host the National Invention Convention.

The events feature the innovations and inventions of students in grades K through 12. It’s a contest that not only showcases students’ problem-solving skills but also their problem-identification skills. Students are allowed to invent whatever they want, devising real-world solutions to problems in their everyday lives.

That’s why Howell calls it a-head-and-a-heart event. Howell, Chief Learning Officer and Director of Learning and Engagement at The Henry Ford, is both an engineer, the head, and an educator, the heart.

"There are a lot of logical reasons that we do this, but watching the conversations and questions come out of the kids, it’s a powerful moment," Howell says.

This is the second year that the museum will be hosting the events. It’s the beginning of what promises to be a long-standing tradition. The Henry Ford is now the official home of the National Invention Convention, an event that will return to the museum, year after year.

For a museum with the phrase American Innovation in its title, it’s a partnership that only makes sense. The next generation of inventors will be showcasing their ideas amidst those of the country’s most storied and celebrated inventors.

"It’s really exciting that the national competition is going to be here from now and hereon into the future. For The Henry Ford, we can continue to recognize and cultivate those inspirational moments. Henry Ford started this organization as the Edison Institute to inspire learning and hosting this competition is the current manifestation of that. We’re carrying the responsibility passed on to us," Howell says.

"For Dearborn, one of the centers of innovation in the world, it helps to recognize that this is still true. These stories help us unleash and elevate, and to remind the world that we continue to be that."

Nearly 200 students from fourteen schools across Michigan will gather at the statewide competition to showcase their inventions, which can include actual physical prototypes as well as drawings, renderings, and programs.

Students will show their design journals and tell their invention stories, from the birth of the idea to its execution. They will have a display board, akin to what can be found at a school's science fair. Students will then give a three-minute product pitch.

The competition tests innovation skills but also communication and entrepreneurial skills, too.

Winners of each level will then be entered into the national contest, which draws competitors from across the country.

"We often underestimate what kids are able to do and these events will blow your mind," Howell says.

"You’ll be inspired by what inspires them."

What inspires students spans all disciplines, she says. The 115 inventions scheduled for the floor of the 2019 Michigan Invention Convention are the result of students’ daily lives.

They’re not just solving puzzles put in front of them. They’re finding the puzzles to solve.

Just like the people found in the halls of the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.

"Problem identification has a very real life and personal connections. We get to see the problems through their eyes, get what matters to them. They’re passionate because they engaged in it," Howell says.

"At The Henry Ford, we recognize the resourcefulness, ingenuity, and innovation of America and Americans. That is our founding principle."

A Silent Ride: Uber Now Offers Quiet Driver Mode

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – If you’re one of those that doesn’t like to chitchat with your driver, or if you just happen to be in a less talkative mood than usual, now you’re in luck.

Rideshare giant Uber announced Tuesday it is offering a new “Quiet Mode” in-app feature for all its Uber Black and Uber Black SUV luxury customers which lets your driver know you’re not in the mood to converse.

The Quiet Mode is under a rider preferences menu which customers must select before they request their driver, according to TechCrunch. They can also choose the internal temperature of the vehicle and whether they will need help with luggage.

The Quiet Mode feature will be available for all Uber Black and Uber Black SUV riders in the U.S. beginning Wednesday. There’s no word on whether the same feature will be offered for UberX riders.

The launch of the new Quiet Mode feature follows Uber’s disappointing initial public offering last Friday. Uber priced its IPO at $45 a share, but as of Wednesday, it was only trading at $41.35.

On the eve of the IPO, Uber and Lyft drivers across the U.S. held a strike calling for higher wages.

What to expect from the Detroit Pistons in the first round

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The Detroit Pistons are only making the playoffs for the second time this decade. Their last two trips were 0-4 sweeps versus the Cavaliers. Some people expect another sweep happening. But what should we prepare for?

Andre Drummond versus Giannis Antetokounmpo

This is the matchup we should all be expecting. Not Blake Griffin against Giannis Antetokounmpo, but Andre Drummond.

Even though the Bucks set up Brook Lopez as a five, he plays intensely on the perimeter, he’s in the top 30 for three-point shots per game. He is also never down low on offense and doesn’t even get an offensive rebound in a game.

The real threat is going to be the Greek Freak, the assuming MVP of this season. Around the paint he is unstoppable, and his efforts to get to the paint is something never seen before in the NBA. The only guy who even has a remote chance to stop him on the Pistons is Drummond.

Drummond is extremely lengthy, he knows how to use his length and his athletic force to be a force on defense. The issue I see for Drummond is his coordination, for a guy with his size being coordinated is a challenge, and he faces it. Against Antetokunmpo who has great athleticism, this can prove an issue, but this isn’t the only issue, Antetokunmpo is unstoppable as it gets, and there is no way to find a real issue to stop him.

Maybe the Pistons should try what the Warriors did to LeBron James in the 2015 Finals? Just let the star score all the points and limit the other players.

But Drummond covering the Greek Freak is as real as it gets and you should expect it.

Blake Griffin won’t be at 100%

Griffin has been battling with his left knee for quite some time now. He missed four of the past eight games and sat for the majority of one that he did play. Overall, the Pistons know they need him. The get’s 20% of the team’s points and that’s not it. He’s the team’s piston to their engine, without him the team fails.

When Blake was out, the team lost half of their games and struggled for the most part.

No matter what, the team will need him when they are facing off against the Bucks. He will be the go-to scoring option and best player to have Antetokunmpo focus on to detract attention other players.

Playing at a slower pace

The Pistons will not be able to play a fast pace game against the Bucks, they are just too athletic and too good on transition.

Pistons won’t risk their chances of playing fast or being blown on transition. Offensive boards will be minimal, a seven-second offense will be virtually gone, and sprinting back on defense will be a norm.

To beat the Bucks they have to make sure they minimize any fast-break. Expect Casey to play that way.

Three-pointers are going to be fired up at an insane rate

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Pistons will be shooting a lot of threes.

It’s been building up to this the entire regular season. Luke Kennard, Wayne Ellington, and Langston Galloway will all be seeing their fair share in shooting opportunities this series. The only issue is, that the Bucks have the best perimeter defense in the league.

Casey is going to want his guys to jack up some triples, it could be the focal point of the offense.

Will they win?

Well so far every underdog team in the East has a 1-0 advantage, maybe the Pistons can continue that list?

It’ll for sure be interesting, the Pistons have the lowest record out of any other team in the playoffs, and they’re facing the team that has the highest.

The Pistons should just play with a lot of heart and determination and that could give them a series win. Pistons fans have to be the best they can to support their team.

What should we expect for the series outcome?

A 4-1 loss, if they’re lucky.

2019 NFL Draft: Day 3, Rounds 4-7 live updates, open thread

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

We’ve finally reached the final, and most exhaustive, day of the NFL Draft. Saturday will see over 130 players drafted, spanning four rounds and seven hours.

The Detroit Lions have already made three picks thus far, to varying degrees of popularity. The one that has drawn the most chatter is undoubtedly second-round pick Jahlani Tavai, whom many had not heard of when Detroit called his name as the 43rd overall selection. T.J. Hockenson and Will Harris were more traditional picks for the Lions, though there has been some criticism of those picks, as well.

The Lions enter the final leg of the draft with still a few positions of need. Will they find a starting-caliber guard? Is it too late to snag a No. 2 outside corner to put opposite Darius Slay? Will the Lions grab that backup quarterback that we’ve all speculated about for the past four months.

Here’s a look at the five picks they have entering Saturday.

Lions remaining picks

  • Round 4, Pick 9 (111 overall)
  • Round 5, Pick 8 (146 overall)
  • Round 6, Pick 11 (184 overall)
  • Round 7, Pick 10 (224 overall)
  • Round 7, Pick 15 (229 overall)

The fourth round starts at 12 p.m. ET Saturday. You can follow along with the Twitter list below:

Change is coming to Michigan's marijuana industry regulations

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

This Tuesday, the way Michigan regulates the marijuana industry will undergo a change.

On March 1st, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) signed executive order 2019-7. The order created the Marijuana Regulatory Agency, within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The agency will officially replace the Medical Marihuana Licensing Board this week.

The change involves more than just reprinting office stationary.

The new agency will be responsible for administering laws related to medical marijuana (which has been legal for a decade) and recreational marijuana (which Michigan voters approved last November).

The state has to come up with new ways to regulate the previously illegal industry. The agency will need to have emergency rules in place by June or July in order to give businesses time to apply for licenses for recreational sales beginning in December. Actual sales of recreational use cannabis products will begin next year.

The agency’s current 102 full time employees will swell to 150 FTE in Fiscal Year 2020.

The governor’s office is optimistic the new agency will be improve the licensing review process that has been criticized in the past as “inefficient.”

Several unlicensed marijuana businesses took the state to court this month after they were threatened with being forced to shut down after a March 31 deadline passed. A Court of Claims judge is expected to issue a decision in the suit by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Michigan state lawmakers are considering legislation to put a firm June 1 deadline in place for cannabis businesses to obtain a state license.
