Acculminating talent while breaking culture barriers, the first ever Culturefest reached back to its roots to premiere one of the largest Black Diaspora festivals of its kind on the East Coast,  incorporating Black powerhouse artists from all over the world.

Scheduled to launch June 8 at the National Harbor, from 1–9 p.m., Culturefest features international artists, including Reggae icons Aidonia; Romain Virgo & The Unit Band; Tanto Metro and Devonte; and SOCA superstars Patrice Roberts; Skinny Fabulous; and Afrobeat legend Timaya and the image band. Culturefest’s Co-founder Freka Scott says, “This one, will be one for the books.”

“I’ve been a part of a lot of festivals, but I really wanted to do something of my own, something that was going to be unique to the Black culture,” Scott said. “This is a Caribbean/African Diaspora celebration, where you’ll get to see all shades of Black and Brown, dancing together in one rhythm, while appreciating what makes all of us different.”

Full of special events including a multi-cultural fashion show, a diverse food court, a craft village, and numerous bars offering exotic drinks by expert mixologists, Chardelle Moore — model, television host and inaugural Culturefest brand ambassador — explained that this day-long celebration of diversity through music, art, food, and fashion “will help bring communities together” and showcase a variety of experiences.

“The concept alone is everything I stand for—entertainment and diversity through the power of culture,” Moore said. “The power of music allows people to come together and with the 21 and over age limit, it also kind of creates this sort of sexy atmosphere that everyone can enjoy, while eradicating community divisions, acknowledging the fact that we all came from the motherland.”

In addition to music and spirited events, the Culturefest arena also plans to lend its stage to highlight and support many important causes including the New Hope Horizon Foundation and the Lupus Foundation/Color Me Happy Fund. Lupus is a disease that continues to affect Black Americans at a disproportionate level.

“The Lupus Foundation of America has always done a lot of work for clinical adult stem cell research, which has been used to help find treatments for lupus,” Scott said. “As a disease that greatly impacts people of color, I couldn’t think of a better organization to help support.”

“A portion of all of our proceeds will go toward various charities that do a lot in the community, which I think is very important and very telling of the magnitude of our Culturefest celebration.”

Trump Delays Auto Tariffs For 6 Months

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Updated at 11:34 a.m. ET

The Trump administration will delay tariffs on cars and auto parts imports for six months while it negotiates trade deals with Japan and the European Union, the White House announced Friday.

President Trump said that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has concluded "that the present quantities and circumstances of automobile and certain automobile parts imports threaten to impair" national security, giving the president the authority to declare tariffs or quotas. Trump cited the same Section 232 authority that he used to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The administration had set a Saturday deadline to decide whether to impose auto tariffs over national security concerns. But instead of taking immediate action, the president is calling for new trade agreements to be negotiated.

His executive order does not specify which tariffs would be imposed if negotiations fail, but industry experts have anticipated tariffs as high as 25%.

The auto industry has been united in opposition to the tariffs, which would hurt American automakers as well as companies abroad. Every car made today involves a complex global supply chain, with thousands of parts sourced from around the world, so even U.S.-made components and vehicles would be affected by tariffs.

An analysis by the Center for Automotive Research found that raising tariffs on imports would increase new car prices by thousands of dollars and reduce new car sales by more than 1 million units a year.

Industry experts also say hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost — and that's without factoring in retaliatory tariffs.

The White House spent about a year deliberating whether car imports threaten national security. In the executive order, the administration argues that American "automotive technological superiority" is essential to the national defense, and that imports weaken U.S. innovation.

Auto industry experts have wholeheartedly rejected the idea that imports threaten national security. Howard Hakes, the chairman of the American International Automobile Dealers Association, recently called the investigation "insulting."

"Our stores and our products are NO threat to the American way of life," he wrote.

Ann Wilson, the senior vice president of government affairs for the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association, says the idea that auto imports threaten national security has "really puzzled the entire industry."

"And when I say the entire industry, I mean vehicle manufacturers, dealers, suppliers, the aftermarket — we have all joined together in opposition to this," she says.

Additionally, the countries that would be affected by these potential tariffs — EU member states and Japan — are close U.S. allies, not military threats.

Trade experts agree the national security justification for these tariffs is tenuous at best. However, the president has broad authority to act on national security grounds, and U.S. courts and the World Trade Organization have historically been reluctant to challenge that authority.

The threatened auto tariffs are widely seen as a negotiating tactic, leverage to try to get trade partners to strike more favorable deals with the U.S.

David Schwietert, interim CEO of the Auto Alliance, says even if the administration is trying to strike deals that might ultimately help American automakers, the mere threat of these tariffs is hurting them now. Among other things, the uncertainty hurts investment as companies find it more difficult to plan for the future.

"This isn't just a hypothetical," he says. "It is causing significant angst in the auto ecosystem — not just manufacturers, but suppliers and in the broader supply chain."

Some lawmakers have expressed concern over Trump's use of Section 232 — rarely used before this administration — to impose tariffs without any input from Congress.

Last week, a bipartisan group of representatives in the House delivered a letter to Larry Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, strongly urging him to "advise the president against imposing trade restrictions that could harm the auto sector and the American economy."

The lawmakers emphasized the tariffs would raise prices for consumers and would hurt American manufacturers — who "have not asked for and do not need protection," the letter stated.

Meanwhile, several members of Congress have supported legislation to limit the president's authority to set tariffs under Section 232.

Metropolitan Hotel rooftop club opens next week in downtown Detroit

One of downtown Detroit's most stunning high-rises will soon offer rooftop access when The Monarch Club opens atop the Metropolitan Building.

The 150-seat club will be the city's highest rooftop bar when it starts service on May 11, and while it will be a club, it'll be a chill place where one can have a conversation. Hell's Kitchen alum Jared Bobkin is running the kitchen, which will offer small plates for between $5 and $18.

The neo-gothic building opened in 1925 and was vacant and falling apart before it was purchased and redeveloped in recent years.

So many restaurants, so little time. Find out the latest Detroit dining news with our weekly food newsletter delivered every Friday morning.

MUST SEE: Pistons’ Blake Griffin personally thanks media members following final presser of season

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

On Monday night, the Detroit Pistons were whooped by the Milwaukee Bucks at Little Caesars Arena in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. It was the fourth straight game where the Bucks made the Pistons look like a D-League team, ending their season.

Though the Pistons were dominated, the blame cannot be placed on Blake Griffin, who despite being injured, played his heart out in Games 3 and 4.

Following his season-ending press conference, Griffin took the time to personally thank all of the reporters in attendance.

Check it out.

UPDATE: Michigan vs. Texas Tech game time changed

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The NCAA Tournament’s Sweet Sixteen will begin on Thursday with four games.  After Thursday night, four teams will be in the Elite Eight with a chance to go to Minneapolis for the 2019 Final Four and the other four remaining teams will see their season come to an end. Here is a preview of Thursday’s games.

West Region

#4 Florida State vs. #1 Gonzaga

Florida State is looking to upset Gonzaga for the second straight season and advance to another Elite Eight. Gonzaga is looking to get a chance to get to their second Final Four in three years.  I can see this game going either way.  Both teams looked good in the first two rounds easily advancing, and both have been solid teams all season.

I give the edge to Florida State because the Seminoles play in the ACC, arguably the best conference in America, while the Bulldogs plays in the WCC who only had one other NCAA tournament team in St Mary’s.  The Seminoles are used to playing top teams, and Terance Mann along with Mfiondu Kabengele will put them over the edge in this game.  They made a deep run in the NCAA tournament last year and look like they can go even farther this season.

Prediction: Florida State-72, Gonzaga-67

#3 Texas Tech vs. #2 Michigan

In the nightcap of the West region, Michigan and Texas Tech, two of the best defensive teams in the country, will look to advance to the Elite Eight.  Both teams were in the Elite Eight last season and have again had tremendous seasons up to this point.

Both cruised to the Sweet Sixteen, and for Michigan, it got big performances by Zavier Simpson, Jordan Poole, and Charles Matthews in wins over Montana and Florida. For Texas Tech, it was able to get through Northern Kentucky and Buffalo behind the play of Jarrett Culver and Matt Mooney.

According to NCAA.com, both teams have top three defenses in the country with Michigan being at 2 and Texas Tech ahead at 1.  Jarrett Culver is the best player on Texas Tech, leading the team in points, assists, and rebounds, and will be a key player in this game.  Charles Matthews, one of Michigan’s best defenders, will likely be matched up with Culver and I believe that matchup very well might decide who wins this game.  Both teams struggle at times offensively, but John Beilein will have the Michigan offense prepared to face the daunting Texas Tech defense and Michigan will score just enough points to win.

Prediction: Michigan-65, Texas Tech-61

South Region

#2 Tennessee vs. #2 Purdue

Tennessee and Purdue will also face off Thursday night with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line. Tennessee was ranked in the preseason top 10 and has played like it all season.  They were even ranked number 1 in the country for some time.  Purdue lost a lot of talent from 2018 and wasn’t expected to have a great year and stumbled out of the gate going 6-5 in their first 11, but they got their act together. They only lost three games for the rest of the season and ended up winning a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Carsen Edwards will be the key in this game.  Edwards scored 42 against Villanova in a blowout win, but only 11 in the Boilermakers loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament.  If Tennessee can contain Edwards, I think they will have a great shot at winning.  Tennessee, led by Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield, will do enough to contain Edwards and advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2010.

Prediction: Tennessee-73, Purdue-65

#1 Virginia vs. #12 Oregon

Virginia and Oregon will face off in the late game in the South Region.  Led by Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter, and Kyle Guy, Virginia has been almost unbeatable all season only losing three games, two of those games being to Duke.  Oregon, led by Payton Pritchard, has had an up and down season.

They started ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason but fell out once freshman star Bol Bol was declared out for the season.  They looked to be out of the tournament picture after losing to UCLA but then proceeded to win eight straight including the Pac 12 tournament.

Embed from Getty Images

After getting over the hump of beating a 16 seed, Virginia dominated Oklahoma in the Round of 32.  Oregon was able to beat Wisconsin and UC Irvine pretty handily winning by 15+ in both games.  The Ducks have had a great run, but I picked Virginia to win the title for a reason, and it is finally the Cavaliers year, plus Virginia will cruise.

Prediction: Virginia-68, Oregon-50

4 Questions: The Lions ‘got a steal’ with 7th-round NT PJ Johnson

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Remember the days before the draft? Remember when so many wanted Ed Oliver as if they were sure that he was going to be the next Aaron Donald? Well, the Lions took a tight end in front of him and waited till the end of the seventh round to go out and get their defensive tackle when they selected PJ Johnson of Arizona.

Much like the Aaron Donald situation, the Lions didn’t necessarily need a defensive tackle, at least not that high in the draft. They currently have a formidable duo in Damon Harrison Sr. and A’Shawn Robinson already on the roster. They’ll probably continue to add to their depth in free agency in the months to come as well.

That’s why it seems that Johnson has the highest of hills to battle up. While he is a mountain of a man at 6-foot-4, 334 pounds, His RAS score shows that he is really lacking athleticism.

Still our friend Gabe Encinas from Arizona Desert Swarm thinks the Lions got themselves a steal in the seventh round. Here’s what he had to say.

POD: What are your overall thoughts on Johnson’s time at Arizona?

ADS: “PJ didn’t spend much time at Arizona but he made the most of it. He had a crazy road to get to Arizona, starting at Sacramento State, battling a burst appendix and a tumor in his leg. He ended up transferring to City College of San Francisco and went pretty unnoticed in recruiting holding offers to FAU, Kansas and Rutgers.

He stepped on campus at 6-foot-4, 335 pounds and filled an immediate need at nose guard. He was turning heads all spring and fall as the newcomer to watch and it translated into the regular season.

He was asked to move all across the line and had a terrific season. When there were rumblings that he was interested in declaring for the NFL Draft it was a massive blow but understandable given his breakout season and two kids.

He is a high energy guy with a massive personality to match his size and production and he’ll always be a fan favorite.

POD: What are his strengths?

ADS: “He has so much versatility. Arizona runs a hybrid 3-3-5/4-2-5 and he initially came in as a nose guard. All throughout the season he was moving around to defensive tackle and end and it worked.

He’s strong, is great with his initial step and works well with his hands. He’s a relentless pass rusher that can disrupt the pocket and as a run stopper he can plug the gaps and moves well down the line to get to the ball. He commanded attention and was constantly doubled and sometimes triple teamed.

He’ll be able to play multiple position and fit just about any package.”

POD: What are his weaknesses?

ADS: “The biggest weakness for him has to be conditioning and athleticism. He has a huge frame and it comes with some bad weight. Mixing that in with the double teams, you could tell when he would get gassed and become less effective.

He is deceptively quick for his size but overall not very athletic. He did not appear to test well at Arizona’s pro day when it came to agility and changing direction.

He did trim down during the draft process so hopefully that is not a concern going forward.”

POD: Is Johnson a guy that has a chance to make the Lions? What kind of impact can he make in the NFL?

ADS: “I think PJ would have had a great shot at making just about any NFL roster. He has the size to compete and the versatility find a role in any scheme. He can play nose guard in three-man front, he can play defensive tackle in a four-man front and he could probably get some use at defensive end in certain packages.

The reason why he fell to the seventh round was likely due to the lack of experience and film. He didn’t play much at Sacramento State, went the junior college route and then had only one season at Arizona.

The Lions got a steal late in the draft. I think PJ can be a great rotational piece that can easily make it to his second contract.”

Dana Nessel Takes Action on Combating Hate

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

By Dana Nessel

As difficult as it is to admit, our country’s history is rich in hate. Far too often, we’re reminded of how far we still must go for the greater good of all people. Violence, pain, death and sorrow impact victims of hate crime every day, both domestically and abroad.

Last month, New Zealand experienced a tragedy that’s all too familiar here in the United States. What was supposed to be a sanctuary and place of worship quickly morphed into a nightmare. A total of 50 people were killed and 31 injured — nine still in critical condition. This was a crime of pure hate and heartbreakingly tragic.

The attack played out on social media along with the visibility of the manifesto online: Terrorists were applauded, and blatant hatred for specific groups along with self-proclamations of racism were all included.

Unfortunately, active shooters and the hate crimes they commit are no stranger to us in the United States:

Charleston, S.C. – June 17, 2015, a man* murdered nine people in worship at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He admitted to police his desire to start a “race war.”

Orlando, Fla. – June 12, 2016, a man* murdered 49 people and injured 53 at Pulse, a popular nightclub geared toward members of the LGBTQ community.

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Oct. 27, 2018, a man* entered the Tree of Life Synagogue, ultimately murdered 11 innocent people and, according to law enforcement, made anti-Semitic statements while shooting and on social media.

I want to make it clear that senseless acts of hate and terror have no place in Michigan. We created the Hate Crimes Unit with the express purpose of protecting everyone in this state from those who wish to terrorize people who live here. We are committed to working relentlessly and tirelessly in cooperation with federal and local authorities.

This is personal for me as a Jewish woman. My grandparents fled Europe in order to be free from those who wished to exterminate them for no other reason than they worshipped differently from the majority. But to them, America was — and is — the land of freedom — freedom to be who we are and to worship any way we like.

Our state is home to immense diversity, which is a source of joy and pride for us. There may be individuals who feel the opposite and choose to speak about their dissatisfaction. Regardless of how vile or appalling their words can be for some, hate speech is not illegal and is, in fact, protected.

When speech turns to action, however, we are compelled to act. That’s why I established the Hate Crimes Unit within the Department of Attorney General. The Hate Crimes Unit is here to work with both local and federal law enforcement to be vigilant in our efforts to investigate and prosecute actual crime driven by hate. As attorney general, I will always uphold the law and do everything within our power to keep our residents safe.

I’m excited to work closely with the Hate Crimes Unit, law enforcement and the community to eradicate the criminal activity propelled by hate. If you are a victim of a hate crime or have credible information about a hate crime, contact the Department of Attorney General at (313) 456-0180.

Let those who wish to harm us know that we will not lie down; we will fight back; we will resist, and we will conquer hate by working together.

Dana Nessel was elected Michigan Attorney General in November of 2018

*We refuse to acknowledge these murderers by name.
